Drinking Decaf Coffee might increase Glucose Utilization in Brain

In a recent study published in the Nutritional Neuroscience, a group of researchers from Mount Sinai School of Medicine stated that brain energy metabolism associated with diabetes type 2 might improve by drinking decaffeinated coffee. Neurodegenerative disorders like the Alzheimer’s disease dementia and others are the diseases that can be triggered by the brain energy metabolism that is a dysfunction. Giulio Maria Pasinetti, who is a MD, PhD, and the leader of the team of scientists who investigated whether supplementing the diet with some standard decaffeinated coffee before the onset of diabetes would be able to improve the resistance to insulin and utilization of glucose in mice who had diet induced diabetes.

The animal’s genetic response from the brain was recorded and analysed after the mice had been given the decaffeinated supplement for five months. The researchers found that more effective metabolism of the glucose by the brain was carried out as the glucose was being used for cellular energy in the brain. Those who suffer from diabetes type 2 also suffer from neurocognitive problems. This is because their brain is not so efficient in utilizing the glucose to generate energy for its functioning. Dr. Giulio Maria Pasinetti said, “Impaired energy metabolism in the brain is known to be tightly correlated with cognitive decline during aging and in subjects at high risk for developing neurodegenerative disorders.

This is the first evidence showing the potential benefits of decaffeinated coffee preparations for both preventing and treating cognitive decline caused by type 2 diabetes, aging, and/or neurodegenerative disorders.” However, this does not mean that everyone should drink decaf coffee, as it is not meant for everyone. Drinking coffee can increase the risk related to heart diseases as it increases the cholesterol level of the blood as well as the blood pressure. These also induce stroke and in extreme cases, premature death due to heart failure. Although, these problems related to the heart are mainly because of the caffeine content of the coffee and the decaf coffee has very low caffeine content.

The next goal of Dr. Giulio Maria Pasinetti and the team of researchers is to test the same effects on the humans in order to assess the results. he says, “In light of recent evidence suggesting that cognitive impairment associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other age-related neurodegenerative disorders may be traced back to neuropathological conditions initiated several decades before disease onset, developing preventive treatments for such disorders is critical.”
